Maya Lighting & Rendering 2: Mental Ray Part 11 - Mental Ray Proxies
This tutorial went over how to use Mental Ray Proxies to decrease the amount of information in the viewport, which can sometimes cause Maya to crash. By exporting the object as a proxy then using the bounding box of the object, the object is represented by its bounding box which often more basic than the object that was there before. I doesn't decrease render time and it can make objects harder to place but it prevents the viewport from making Maya crash.
